Aquatic Plants
Water Lilys
The hardy water lily is one of the most desired water garden plants as they produce magnificent blooms from late Spring and into early Autumn. Most hardy water lilies are perennials in zones 3-10. Hardy water lilies are available in white, red, pink, yellow, changeable, peach/orange, and now in purple. Hardy water lilies are not just for show. Some of the benefits to having water lilies in you pond include: providing shade / protection for fish, shading water helps to reduce algae growth, absorbing excess nutrients from the water, insulating the water from temperature swings, and the pads provide a place for small creatures like frogs to sit.
Marsh Marigold
Marsh marigold is a perennial herb in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Also known as cowslip, cowflock, or kingcup, it is a lovely harbinger of spring. As its name suggests, marsh marigold is a plant of wet places such as marshes, fens, ditches, wet woods, swamps. Indeed, the Latin species epithet, "palustris" refers to "swampy, marshy, or of wet places". Marsh marigold prefers full sun to light shade. Marsh marigold can grow from about 8 inches to about 24 inches tall.
Iris
Water irises are a lovely addition to any pond, showcasing their gorgeous architectural foliage and vibrant flowers in a range of stunning hues like white, blue, purple, lavender, red, and yellow. These beauties typically start blooming in late spring and continue through mid-summer, with the specific timing varying based on the cultivar and where they're located geographically. Whether you're looking to add some visual interest to your backyard oasis or simply want to enjoy the beauty of nature up close, water irises are a wonderful choice.
Juncus
Plants in the genus Juncus are known as rushes and reside in the Juncaceae family. Rushes favor the edges of ponds, bogs, and low, moist areas. They do well in boggy soils and are also reliable growers under fluctuating water conditions. Because they can ride out intermittent dry spells, they’re useful for rain gardens and bioretention, and other features where water conditions are variable.
